Aguirre & Jonnson

Giovanna E. Aguirre and Lars J. Jonnson have worked together since 1995. Based in Örebro, Sweden, they work individually and together across painting, photography, sculpture, moving image and public space. The collaboration makes room for two ways of seeing to produce something neither could have arrived at alone.

A birdcage acquires eyes and furniture legs. In Humanoids, a pair of feet becomes a creature that seems almost human. Recognition comes with a small disturbance. Humour draws us in. What follows may touch on loneliness, control, consumption or the difficulty of living together. The work can be affectionate and unruly at the same time.

In Between Worlds, images of war and everyday life meet on fragments of glass. As visitors move, one image comes through another and the shadows shift.

Play is part of how they work. An accident, a stubborn material or an improbable combination can change a work’s direction. A small object can draw someone close. A larger construction can alter a route through a room. They invite people to form their own connections and try another point of view.

Their practice extends into public commissions, participatory projects and curatorial work. Over the years, the city itself has become one of their exhibition spaces.

Everything Is Now names the way earlier works can set new ones in motion. GilaBLUE opens onto individual works and encounters still to come. An exhibition can begin with a single piece, a constellation or a new production.
